Too Much Sugar Gives you Cavities

Though Bengali cinema is better known for its artistry than its masala, one predominant trend in many Indian films is the ‘love story’. Whether we’re talking about a political drama like Kanamachi or a full on masala flick like Khoka 420, the ‘love’ aspect has always been central. Perhaps this is an excuse to showcase the beautiful leading ladies starring in these movies or perhaps these directors want to reflect upon the yearnings of the contemporary Indian soul, almost every mainstream Indian movie has this aspect to it.

Movies like these make money. Their soundtracks are often lucrative and their leads are put on pedestals and elevated to sex icon status. You’ll find full HD wallpapers all over the internet and the more popular songs will be dancing upon everyone’s lips. Even Tollywood, an industry that is better known for its art films, caters to the masses when it comes to its on screen romances.

On the downside, if not woven into the storyline well, these romantic liaisons can take away a lot from the main story line. In Kanamachi, the viewer is distracted by the love triangle between the leads which is honestly a little unnecessary considering the serious topic the director is trying to tackle.  In Amar Bodyguard, the story line, based around yet another love triangle is vacuous and clichéd peppered with haphazard fight sequences. In fact, a lot of movies that have come out this year try to depend on the lucrative nature of the filmy romance but overlook the importance of quality in doing so.

Hopefully this trend of capitalizing on movie romance won’t become an epidemic in Tollywood and storylines shall remains poignant and full bodied, with romance being used just as a sweetener to an already flavourful experience.
